The GHS is a system for standardizing and harmonizing the classification and labelling of chemicals. Chemicals are associated with codes that define their health, physical and environmental hazards.This universal hazard communication system was developed to ensure that employers, employees and consumers are provided with adequate, practical, reliable and comprehensible information on the hazards of chemicals, so that they can take effective preventive and protective measure for their own health and safety.
  The GHS classifications for chemicals associated with products in this database may be viewed by selecting the "Advanced" button on the Chemical Ingredients tables. Since this is a work in progress, GHS classifications may not be shown for all chemical ingredients.

  SVHC is a substance (identified by the European Chemicals Agency) that may have serious and often irreversible effects on human health and the environment. SVHC are defined in Article 57 of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 (“the REACH Regulation”) and include substances which are:
  1.  Carcinogenic, Mutagenic or toxic to Reproduction (CMR), meeting the criteria for classification in category 1 or 2 in accordance with Directive 67/548/EEC or in category 1a or 1b in accordance with EC No 1272/2008This directive was recently replaced by the new EU regulation (EC) No 1272/2008.
  2.  Persistent, Bioaccumulative and Toxic (PBT) or very Persistent and very Bioaccumulative (vPvB) according to the criteria in Annex XIII of the REACH Regulation, or

      Emergency Overview
      White crystalline powder packaged in a breathable pouch with a plastic housing or a carton with removable front and back panels; no odor. Not a fire hazard. No significant health or environmental effects associated with this material.
      Potential Health Effects
      EYE: Not an eye irritant.
      SKIN CONTACT: Not a skin irritant.
      INGESTION: Material is practically non-toxic. Small amounts (1-2 tablespoonfuls) swallowed during normal handling operations are not likely to cause injury as long as the stomach is not overly full; swallowing larger amounts may cause injury
      INHALATION: None known.
      

    • Chronic health effects

      From MSDS:
      Based on published studies on its effects in animals and humans, sodium bicarbonate is not teratogenic or genotoxic. Only known subchronic effect is that of a marked systemic alkalosis.

    • Carcinogenicity

      Not classified as carcinogenic by NTP, IARC, OSHA, ACGIH or NIOSH.

    • Handling information

      Store in cool, dry areas and away from incompatible substances.
      Sodium Bicarbonate reacts with acids to yield carbon dioxide gas which can accumulate in confined spaces. Do not enter confined spaces until they have been well ventilated and carbon dioxide and oxygen levels have been determined to be safe.

    • Disposal information

      Bury in a secured landfill in accordance with all local, state and federal environmental regulations. Empty containers may be incinerated or discarded as general trash.

      EYES: Check for and remove contacts. Flood eyes with clean flowing water, low pressure and luke warm (not hot) if possible, occasionally lifting eyelids.
      INGESTION: If large amounts of this material are swallowed, do not induce vomiting. Administer water if person is conscious. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person.
      NOTE TO PHYSICIAN: Large doses may produce systemic alkalosis and expansion in extracellular fluid volume with edema.
